jLibrary 1.0 beta3 - What's new and noteworthy

User Interface

In this version there were several changes relative on the user interface:

  • All client infrastructure has been migrated to Eclipse 3.1. This is the same that saying that there were a great number of improvements in the user interface, and in the application performance.
  • A new properties view has been added. This view allows to see fastly the attributes of the selected repositories, directories, documentos or resources.
  • Work with resources is now easier and more intuitive. Now, the resources are integrated within the repositories view. Resouces are now a first-line entity within a repository, and by consequence, they don't depend on a concrete document. Now, resources are independent, and can be created, indexed, modified, deleted or associated with multiple documents.
  • A new wizard has been added for creating resources.

  • Within the properties tab, now there is a new section to manage document's resources. This section also supports drag&drop from other views.
  • Also it has been aded a relations section within the document's properties tab to manage its relationships. This section also supports drag&drop.

  • Resources and Relations views have been simplified, being now read-only views. To add resources and relations to a document, you should use the document's properties tab instead.
  • Relationships diagram is now updated in real time according to changes in the document structure.
  • The content of HTML documents is now updated in real time if the source code is modified from the source view.
  • There has been added functionality to provide automatic application updates, thanks to the Eclipse auto-update infrastructure. Also, it has been create a web site (http://jlibrary.sourceforge.net/update) to hold the different application updates (currently there is nothing there). This module has been contributed by Robert Bacs!

  • It has been added support to drag&drop documents and directories directly from the operating system. Now, there isn't an easier document management system on the market!
  • It has also been added support to copy documents and directories on the operating system and paste them directly in the repositories. I'll repeat myself, there isn't an easier document management system on the market!
  • Internet document crawling has been very simplified. Now, the operation is very similar to any web ripper on the market. From jLibrary, is possible to download a complete web page, or select from a list the resources that you want to download.

  • It has been created an installer for Windows platform. So now, jLibrary installation is much more simple.

  • Language and document type have been added to the document properties section.

  • Several ActiveX components presentation has been improved.
  • Some user preferences have been removed to make jLibrayr easier.
  • Thanks to Tom Hathaway, the English translation is now much better.
  • And of course, it has been fixed many, many bugs.

Help and support

In this version, some minor changes have been done on the help system:

  • The introduction page has been slightly improved.
  • Now the introduction page can appear minimized, and allows a fast access to its information.

  • It has been added a dynamic help page, that allows to browse help topics very fastly, perform searches, etc.

  • The help server now is loaded until demand. This implies that jLibrary startup time is faster.

HTML Exportation
  • The freemarker templates have been adapted to the new repository structure. Also, several bugs have been fixed. There is no new templates in this version.

Web client

¡THE WEB CLIENT DISAPPEARS !

  • Unfortunately, the web client has disappeared, because I did not have enough time to its support.
  • The good news, is that i'm searching for somebody to get this work done, having entire freedom for technology election. Ideally, the web client should be a tool that allow repository browsing, that should be configurated by templates (maybe freemaker ones), and that should use the latest market standars, for example Java Server Faces, Portlets, or developed using anyother framework that could assure a better future support.

Anyone that wants to experiment with these technologies, learning them, and using them (or others like AJAX) in a very interesting project, feel free to contact with me.

jLibrary server

The server core has greatly improved during the latest months.

  • Dozens of bugs have been fixed.
  • Now, the repository server comes with a pre-created repository. It's the repository default.
  • The latest library versions have been installed. This includes: Hibernate 3, PDFBox 0.7.1, POI 2.5.1, Lucene 1.4.3, Axis 1.2.1, xstream 1.0.2
  • jLibrary now starts automatically the first time you runs the server.
  • A timer service has been added to perform periodic clean operations on the database and search repository indexes. This should help to solve possible integrity problems without restarting the server.
  • Directory and repository storage has been greatly improved, fixing several internationalization problems, and allowing easy resource renaming.
  • The keyword and text extration engine has been improved. Also, new stop words list have been created for English and Spanish languages.
  • The HTML parser has been completly replaced by htmlparser much more effective.
